Tenant participation strategy

Taking Part: A chance for you to work with your landlord to improve your housing

Our vision is…

To create a chance for United Welsh and tenants to work together to improve their housing conditions and housing services;
and to agree on levels of participation.

Tenant Participation is seen as a two-way process, which allows sharing of ideas, information and responsibilities between United Welsh, your landlord, and you, our tenant.

Our values (about the way we work) are…

  • Treating everyone equally whatever their background
  • Listening to our customers and giving them what they want whenever we can
  • Being accountable
  • Making good financial decisions
  • Helping staff and tenants to develop their skills
  • Working in partnership

Our aims are…

  • Encouraging more involvement  from tenants when we make decisions

  • Improved housing services

  • Developing local agreements between United Welsh and our tenants

  • Make sure that tenants can live in a good, positive environment.

To do this we will need …

 (1) To make it easier for you to be involved in decision-making and improve our communications.

We hope to build on the positive way United Welsh and tenants already work together.  We expect our staff to listen to your views. We will respect all our tenants and we expect tenants to respect staff in return.

We aim to make sure the information we give you is useful and easy to understand. We will tell you the kind of service you can expect from us, and let you know if we change the way we work, based on what tenants tell us.

(2) To give people a chance to be involved in more ways

We know that people have the right to be involved in decisions that affect them - or to choose not to. We want to give people the chance to take part at a level they choose.

We will be honest with people when we ask for their opinion.

We will give our staff what they need to help tenants take part.

We will look at how we ask questions to make sure we learn and do it better each time.

We will also make sure young people can give their views.

We will speak to voice4tenants on changes in the way we work.

(voice4tenants is a group made up of United Welsh tenants who talk to us about things that affect them and their houses)

(3) To support local tenant groups and help them to be a success

We want to work closely with local tenant groups where people life. This will help us create safe, happy communities.

We aim to have tenant compacts, or agreements, with all our tenants. We will help anyone who wants to be a part of this.

Whenever we ask for tenants’ views we will do it together with the people in voice4tenants.

(4) To give people a chance to suggest improvements to our services.

We will make it easier for you to take part in improvements to services and will listen to what you have to say.

We hope to let tenants test our services to make sure they are working.

We also hope to include tenants when we create new services and listen to what people have to say.

(5) To make sure all this is working

We will need to agree on how we know this has all been a success.

We will make sure that future tenant and staff surveys will ask about tenant participation.

We will review this Strategy every three years with smaller reviews each year, a group made up of tenants and staff will do this.

If you would like to know more about taking part, speak to United Welsh and we will be happy to hear what you have to say.
