Homeswapper Exchange Register

A Mutual Exchange can occur when Council or Housing Association tenants wish to ‘swap’ properties. Many tenants of this type of housing have a right to swap homes with other such tenants in a mutual exchange of tenancies. Tenants of different landlords can swap, but they always need their landlord’s permission prior to doing so.

United Welsh Housing Association has recently signed up to a Mutual Exchange Website called ‘HOMESWAPPER’. Homeswapper is the UK’s largest community of social housing tenants looking to swap homes. Thousands of tenants join every month to use Homeswapper to find a local or even national swap.

This service is free to tenants of landlords who have partnered with Homeswapper. Otherwise there is a small membership fee to join. Please check with your landlord to see if they have partnered with Homeswapper. United Welsh have partnered with Homeswapper so our tenants can access this service FREE of charge.

If you register at www.homeswapper.co.uk, once your entry on the website has been approved by your landlord, you will be able to access information about tenants from other participating Local Authorities and Housing Associations who wish to exchange properties, as well as details of those wishing to move here from outside the district.

Homeswapper will also email or text you at regular intervals with details of suitable exchange partners. If you do not have access to the internet yourself there are other ways for you to register and access the Homeswapper website;

  • Family or Friends
  • Local Libraries have free internet access available to the public
  • Internet Café’s (a fee will be charged for this)
  • At our local offices we have free internet access to our tenants

Once you have found someone to exchange properties with then you will need to contact your Housing Officer and fill in a Mutual Exchange form.

A mutual exchange has to be agreed by both landlords before you can move. Please note that United Welsh may not grant permission for an exchange in the following circumstances:

  • You have rent arrears
  • Your home is in a poor condition or state or decoration
  • The property you wish to move to is unsuitable for your needs
  • You are in any other breach of your tenancy agreement
  • You have a ‘Starter’ tenancy, and are still within the first 12 months of your tenancy
