On Friday 8th September employees from United Welsh took to the fairways of the West Monmouthshire Golf Club in support of Blaenau Gwent CBC ‘Mayor’s charity golf tournament’. The event raised over £3,000, money that will be split between two very worthy causes.
The first of these charities is the Blaenau Gwent Young Carers. A young carer is a young person under the age of 18 who looks after someone, usually within their own home, who is suffering from an illness or physical disability. They usually care for a member of their family, which can include parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers or sisters. They carry out household chores, give medical and personal care, and are there for emotional support. Traditionally support has been directed towards those people suffering from an illness or physical disability, however it is now recognised that people providing care also need support.
The second charity to benefit from the golf day is World Vision UK (The Adet Secondary School Project - Ethiopia). Ethiopia is Africa’s oldest independent country and remains one of the world’s poorest countries with a very low average income where only a third of the population can read and write. The town of Adet is home to a rural population of 356,825. However, the school system is in desperate need of updating. There are approximately 90 – 100 students in a single and very crowded classroom. The aim of the Adet project is to rebuild the secondary school and provide a better learning environment for the young people of this small village.
Wayne Emery, United Welsh Team Captain said, “Support for the event was excellent and we are all very pleased to have taken part and raised so much money for such a worthy cause. It was definitely worth all the time spent in bunkers and trees!”
