Llys Nant y Mynydd opens its doors

LLys Nant Y Mynydd, Nantyglo has opened its doors to its first tenants.  With very few apartments left the official opening ceremony with the Deputy Leader of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council and other dignitaries took place in October.

44 independent apartments are situated in the stylish scheme.  On-site there is a restaurant, coffee shop, craft room, computer suite, gym, hairdresser, potting shed and spacious communal areas.

Housing with Care, often known as Extra Care, is a relatively new housing option for people over 55 with care or housing support needs. It is not a residential care home, or a nursing home. It is simply a flexible housing option for long term independence.  Supported by Welsh Government funding the scheme is managed by United Welsh with Blaenau Gwent Council Care workers looking after the support needs of the tenants.

Llys Nant y Mynydd – meaning Mountain Stream Court was named by Reagan-Leigh Griffiths who was a pupil of Coed Y Garn Primary School last year.  Reagan-Leigh was applauded at the opening ceremony for decideing upon this very fitting name. The approach to the scheme has been one of inclusivity; and the community focused team at Cowlin Construction and United Welsh have laid great foundations for the residents of the scheme to be fully immersed in the local community.   Coed Y Garn gardening club and some crafty pupils joined in the days celebrations making Christmas cards and planting seeds for next year.  The school has worked closely with the complex since its inception and will continue to do so learning from and sharing with the tenants.

Ian Gilbert Chair of United Welsh added; “This is the future of social housing for people over 55 with support needs.  The time and effort that has been put into developing an aspirational service illustrates that the social housing sector can challenge the private sector in design, feel and delivery.  We are proud to have illustrated just how much can be delivered through successful partnership working.”
