Children design their ‘Dream’ home

Children at Deighton Primary school in Tredegar have been helping United Welsh to design a “Dream Home”.  The children were asked to draw, paint or build their dream home and came up with some imaginative artwork.

The art project is just one of a number of initiatives United Welsh’s Community Investment team is developing with the school – which focus on the environmental and eco friendly aspects of the building site right on their doorstep.  United Welsh and GEE Construction have been working with the school to explain all about the new houses and to alert the children to the potential dangers of a building site. Over the past few months the children have been eagerly watching and recording the progress of the build.

During the Autumn term the children will get the opportunity to be Bob the Builder by donning hard hats and safety jackets when they visit the site and they’ll be getting their hands dirty planting shrubs and trees as part of the site’s landscaping scheme.

Head teacher Roger Fawke said: “The children are following the building work from a safe distance within the school grounds and have been sketching and taking photographs.  Lorries and large diggers fascinate young children but it’s good that they are learning they can also be dangerous.  The workmen are excellent, they often stop when a class is in the playground and talk to the children and show them what they are doing”.

Dennis Williams, Site Manager for GEE Construction who judged the art competition said: “The effort the children put into this is outstanding, the pictures and models they produced are amazing and it’s been a very difficult job to pick winners”.
