Regeneration in Action

The community of Forgeside near Blaenavon has benefited from grants of nearly
£900K from the Welsh Assembly Government. The money has been used to refurbish

John Skipper, who died suddenly on Saturday 17th

New resource base for learning difficulties
Cllr Harry
Andrews, Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, has officially opened a
new state-of-the-art resource centre in Wyllie near Blackwood. The centre will
provide a base from which people with learning disabilities can access
community-based activities.

 State of the art bungalow is a taste of
things to come!

Dai Davies MP have officially opened a state-of-the-art supported housing
bungalow in Blaina. The bungalow will provide accommodation for individuals with
learning disabilities and has been built specifically to meet the needs of the

United Welsh delivers for tenants
United Welsh
is delivering good quality services for its 3,600 tenants, according to an
inspection report published today by the Auditor General for Wales. The housing
association demonstrated a range of strong capabilities and examples of good
practice in the provision of housing services for its tenants.

Innovative and affordable

housing development with a difference. The first of its kind in Wales, this
innovative development involves the construction of modular style homes under
the controlled conditions of a factory. Most importantly of all, the houses are

to ‘Race for Life’ and raise money for cancer research and to remember Sue
Phillips, a work colleague who sadly passed away in September 2006.

Raising money for a happy
Christmas 'Home and Away'
This year United Welsh has responded to two
requests for help in making Christmas a bit more special for children both in
Wales and abroad. A number of fund raising activities have been organised for
Rhymney Women’s Aid and the ‘Leaves of Hope’ appeal in Belarus. The money will
contribute towards gifts for children living in either a refuge or orphanage
over Christmas ‘Home and Away’.

‘Pitch in for charity’
On Friday 8th
September employees from United Welsh took to the fairways of the West
Monmouthshire Golf Club in support of Blaenau Gwent CBC ‘Mayor’s charity golf

United Welsh have launched a new scheme to get more of its older residents on-line and surfing the Internet.

More
affordable housing planned for Caerphilly
Caerphilly will have 48 new affordable homes by 2008 following a major land
purchase by United Welsh.
United Welsh as bought three acres of wasteland at Pen Rhos, at the top of
Nantgarw Hill, which was formerly used for tipping colliery
spoil, with a £4.25 million social housing grant from the Welsh
Assembly Government.

Caerphilly Tigers kick start new team
Caerphilly’s aspiring young female rugby players now have their own team to
join following sponsorship from local housing association United
Welsh.
Caerphilly and Cardiff-based United Welsh has sponsored the first Under-14s
side of the Caerphilly Tigers, the female rugby teams based at
Caerphilly RFC who are affiliated with the Welsh Women’s Rugby
Union and play teams all over south Wales.
Funds have
provided the team kit as well as equipment including balls,
cones and tag tails. The sponsorship has also paid for brand
new shirts, socks and shorts for the Tigers’ Under-17s team as
well as rugby coach training.

United Welsh makes a difference with pupils
United Welsh has teamed up with pupils from
Hengoed Primary School to make a difference to the environment
on national Make a Difference Day.
Seventeen children aged between six and 11 spent the day (8 November)
picking up the litter from their school grounds and playing
fields equipped with litter-grabbers provided by United Welsh
and joined by the organisation’s community services team.

DIY Homebuy Scheme gets first-time buyers onto the property ladder
First
time buyers in Blaenau Gwent are being given a helping hand up the property
ladder thanks to a new £150,000 scheme run by United Welsh.
The DIY Homebuy Option will lend first-time buyers up to 30 per cent of the cost of
their home on a first-come-first-served basis on property purchases completed by
mid March 2006. This means, once they have found the home they want to buy,
purchasers only have to fund 70 per cent of the sale price through either a
mortgage or mortgage and deposit combined.
